Frequently asked questions

1. Who should attend?

Information security professionals, code developers, as well as tertiary students with a technical background.

Our past participants have held titles such as:

  • Security analysts
  • Security architects
  • Web developers
  • Network administrators
  • Software engineers
  • ICT managers
  • Information Technology Security Advisors (ITSAs)
  • Information Technology Security Practitioners (ITSPs)
  • Information Technology Security Officers (ITSOs)

2. Are there any pre-requisites, or required skills?

A basic knowledge of hacking concepts is required as a minimum.

3. What equipment do I need?

Equipment: You need a laptop or computer, along with headphones and a microphone.

Preferred Browser: We recommend using the latest version of Firefox to participate. However, the Hackathon platform will work with an up-to-date version of any browser.

Optional Tools: While you can participate using only your browser’s developer tools, you may also choose to use the following optional tools:

4. Are there prizes?

Prizes awarded for Gold Standard:

1st Prize – $1,000 Gift Card
2nd Prize – $600 Gift Card
3rd Prize – $400 Gift Card

Prizes awarded for Shadow Bank:

1st Prize – $1,000 Gift Card
2nd Prize – $600 Gift Card
3rd Prize – $400 Gift Card

5. Can I switch challenges half-way through?

Each team should select one challenge only. Choose your challenge upon ticket purchase, amendments permitted up to 72 hours before the start of the event.

6. What is the schedule for the day?

8:30 – Log-on

9:00 – Challenges Begin

11:00 – First Learning Lab

12:30 – Lunch

13:00 – Challenges Resume

15:00 – Second Learning Lab

17:00 – Winners Announced

7. How many people can I have in my team?

Team size is up to 4 players, you can compete as a solo player. Every participant must  purchase a ticket.

Team Participation: The maximum number of players per team is 4. If more than 4 players are attending from the same organisation, please split the teams e.g. ‘Organisation Team 1’, ‘Organisation Team 2’…etc

10. Where does the event take place?

This year due to movement restrictions the event will take place remotely, participants across Australian and New Zealand can enter.

11. How will communication take place during the event?

For communication during the event, we will use Discord. Participants can use discord to ask us questions and to listen to tutorials and instructions. Registration details will be available closer to the event date.
